Welcome to the Access Cal Poly Humboldt website. This website was created to provide information to help students, employees, and community members with disabilities safely visit campus and to raise the visibility of barriers in the hope that the university will address them.
Note: this website and its contents were not created by Cal Poly Humboldt. The content was created by employees and students associated with the university but in their free time.
Cal Poly Humboldt is in Arcata California in the foothills with redwood forests to the east and the ocean to the west. It is a beautiful campus but it is also aging and has some steep slopes that can make navigating campus challenging. The campus is also over a decade behind on ADA standards and has a large number of physical barriers to access. We are working to document these (see the issues list) but this is a volunteer effort so we do not believe it is a complete list. If you would like to join our Google Group to be notified of changes and future meetings, contact jim@accesscph.org.
On Campus
Most folks first visit to campus are from out of town. You can get to campus from Highway 101. You will want to check a map to find your way to parking. There are a number of accessible parking spaces for folks with physical mobility issues but getting from the parking spaces to where you want to go can be a challenge.
Warning: The “Printable Disability Access Map” available on the CPH website contains information that is incorrect and potentially dangerous. We have created an online map that contains expanded information for access for everyone.
We recommend working out your route before getting to campus. You may need to park, see a section of campus, and then move your car to another parking space to get to another area of campus. To learn more about accessing the different areas on campus, see our “tips” page.
Paper (PDF) Maps
We have two PDF maps available:
Note: we have surveyed camps and verified the information in the maps. However, campus is always changing and the surveys need to be verified so please use these with caution.
- The Access Map shows accessible paths to help with navigating campus. It includes pathways with approximate slopes, elevators, and automatic doors. Accessible bathrooms are not included but they are available in the Interactive Online Map below.
- The Access Issue Map shows the locations of some of the barriers to campus. This includes slopes that are over ADA requirements.
Interactive Online Map
Our interactive online map contains a wealth of information about the location of buildings, rooms, and services on campus including accessible parking, accessible bathrooms, and accessible and not so accessible paths. To get started, go to the map and click on the layers button:
Then, click on “Accessibility” and check the things you want to see. If you click on a building, you’ll see the rooms and services within the building and you’ll be able to change which floor you are viewing. You can see the elevations and slopes that are on campus by clicking on the backgrounds button:
Note that the map is still under construction as we are creating it on a volunteer basis without support from CPH.
We also recommend reviewing the evacuation procedures online that include procedures for individuals with disabilities as these are not, at the time of writing this, posted in the buildings.
Getting Access
If you need any type of accommodation from the university, including access to the shuttle, the place to start is the Campus Disability Resource Center (CDRC). Their home page provides forms for you to fill out to be qualified for accommodations. If you have a concern about access they also have a form to report concerns. A list of their key web pages is in the section below.
Information Technology Services (ITS) provides technology access and includes the Academic Technology Initiative which is tasked with making sure technology is accessible. If you have an issue with electronic technology, you can enter a ticket at its.humboldt.edu.
Facilities Management (FM) handles the physical plant. If you have a concern with physical barriers, you can fill out a Concern Form on the CDRC website. If you are a CPH employee, you can enter a Work Request on the FM website.
The Committee on Accessibility and Access Compliance (CAAC) provides oversite of the situation on campus and we are working closely with them to improve the situation. CAAC is creating the first ADA Transition Plan for the campus which includes a list of issues that need to be addressed. If you have entered a Concern Form and your concern has not been addressed in a timely manner, feel free to contact CAAC (james.graham@humboldt.edu) to discuss having your concern added as an issue to the issues list.
